Christmas is coming – are you getting ready for it?
December is less than three weeks away, and I’m starting to adjust my mental radar to it. It’s kind of like a ten-step-rocket; the feeling of Christmas.
First and foremost, the treats. I did leave behind the bag of Christmas cookies at the bakery the other day, even if I had picked it up… On the other hand, I’ve already consumed quite a bit of rice porridge (ed. creamy version covered in cinnamon and butter; a special Danish Christmas treat) during my pregnancy, i.e. September, haha! I should have held on to the cookies! It’s the first step, all of the treats, which you can start munching on already come autumn.
Second, I’ve started thinking about decorations. I’ve ordered an advent wreath – I’ve opted for an extravagant version, an ‘eternity’ wreath from Poppy Kalas, whose dried flowers will look beautiful year after year (in my eyes, perfectly justifying the purchase).
Christmas parties! The beautiful setting of a lot of get-togethers with several different groups, for the most part offering meat balls, boiled pickled red cabbage, schnapps and present games. On Friday, I’m attending the first one of the year – and even though I only intend to participate in the first part of the evening, I am still excited, and I have no intentions of skimping on the sequins.
Next, there’s the sight of the city. Adam, the baby, Frida and I went for a walk yesterday in the streets of Copenhagen, sipping on hot chai (that’s a bit Christmassy) and checking out the Christmas lights in the streets. All of those glowing bulbs in the dark and spruce-framed windows – I love it.
The music, gosh. Christmas music! I put it on during the last weekend of November, and that’s when we start climbing up the Christmassy scale. It’s almost as if my Christmas spirit grows exponentially with the volume of the music, and we have to have Driving Home for Christmas, Last Christmas, some Judy Garland and Bandaid. And Let love be love, not to forget!
^^^The way one looks when Adam says, ‘you can’t open that yet, can you?!’
Sixth step on the Christmas-rocket is the gifts. And I can stretch the excitement about those quite far. Pondering what to give to whom. Conjuring up ideas, this gut feeling of, ‘YES, I found the very right thing!,’ to the point where I almost have to tell the person what I’ve come up with, haha! It’s the best.
But there’s also a step on the rocket that’s about the beauty of doing something good for (even more) people. Finding gifts with a greater or grander reach than just Christmas. Like Adam, who one year wanted us to donate all Christmas expenses to a specific charity organisation. Or the classic – donating a goat to a family in need. Nothing creates an overflow of Christmas spirit like doing something good for others (because that makes it even better for ourselves). And gifts that cause double joy are twice as good.
And that’s something The Body Shop is mastering really well! Creating gifts that spread double joy!
They’ve created the prettiest gift boxes with lots of colours and great content – benefitting the recipient, but also the planet. Just like it’s always been with The Body Shop… and all of the boxes have quite a greater value than the price itself, which also counts, yay!
If you’re planning to go all in, there’s a quite lovely advent calendar with 24 doors – there are 14 full-size products in the one with the fox, but it also comes in smaller versions. Some years, I’ve made advent calendars for my mum and my mother-in-law, and they’ve always been so happy! My mum has given me so much over the years (on the big scale – but also on the advent calendar scale). It’s so cool as an adult to be able to spoil your mum and give back! The same goes for your mother-in-law!
There are so many nice gift boxes, which are guaranteed to bring joy to mothers, sisters, cousins, friends. For the gift exchange games! Or the Secret Santa! Or the hostesses working hard in the kitchens for the holiday parties? Or for the gentlemen, not to mention!
Perhaps the small shea-kit for the Secret Santa? The shea body butter was my first addiction on the beauty front. Aw, a trip to the mall in Helsingør, and I just had to bring home a jar of shea body butter. The small kit is quite good for Secret Santa, also in terms of the price.
There’s also the little peppermint bag with small Bismarck walking sticks on it, which is sooo nice. It contains scrub, body butter, hand cream and shower gel; perhaps a nice gift for your sister – and it comes in the cutest bag.
I’m also pretty into the New Year’s box! It could work as a nice treat for the friend who has to go back to work between Christmas and New Year’s? A little countdown-joy for opening each day. I can’t find it online so find it in the stores.
On The Body Shop web shop, you can furthermore search for gifts according to whether you’re vegan, male or female. Search on cost, on whether it’s for the body or the face. Very manageable, very neat! You can see it here.
And then it lets you double the joy – for the recipient and on a larger scale. For every The Body Shop transaction throughout november and december, money (1.8 pence to be exact) is donated to building bio-bridges around the world together with The Woodland Trust UK and World Land Trust. What is that? With a growing population comes more and more land-acquisition, driving animals together in less space – in some cases, animals are being deprived of their natural habitat. Bio-bridges help protect and replant green passages between healthy forest areas, helping isolated and endangered animal and plant species to propagate. A small-scale example could be green highway overpasses. Our roadnets often restrict access for animals, but by building these green bridges, we enable the animals to cross. I’ve seen that on roadtrips in southern Europe, and it’s so nice!! These projects are super big-scale, though. The goal is to re-wild, i.e. protect and regenerate, 75 million square metres worth of habitats and building 10 bio-bridges before 2020.
